DEARBORN — The Diversity Advisory Group at Dearborn High sponsored a special event at the school that challenged students to “Mix It Up” at lunch. The lunch is part of a national project that encourages students to get to know their classmates and meet new people. Organizers at Dearborn High were encouraged by the outcome of the “Mix It Up” lunch held on February 27. Students who took part in the event enjoyed talking with classmates they didn’t know and possibly even made some new friends. To help with the effort several local restaurants including Bangkok 96, Mexican Fiesta and La Pita donated food for the lunch.
“We hope everyone at Dearborn High will eventually give it a try and break the walls of division that can keep us apart,” commented Peggy Deegan, Dearborn High teacher and one of several organizers.
In high schools across the country students have expressed opinions on how hard it can be at times to fit in and make new friends. More importantly, they have also expressed a desire to change this. Mix It Up believes in the power of youth to create and sustain real change with a simple call to action, take a new seat at a new lunch and take time to meet a classmate.
