LANSING — Michigan will adopt an expanded child safety seat law for motor vehicle travel beginning on July 1.

The new law means children under age 8 will have to travel in some sort of child restraint system unless they have grown to 4-foot-9. Most children between the ages of 4 and 8 will be using booster seats.

More than 30 other states already have expanded their child safety seat laws this decade.

Research suggests proper use of the safety seats provides more protection for children in auto accidents.
