DEARBORN — City Councilman and Dearborn Rotarian George Darany was recently presented with Dearborn Rotary Club’s “2008 Outstanding Rotarian of the Year” award in recognition of his nearly 30 years of community service.
Presenting the award at a recent Rotary meeting was Bob Ziolkowski, the Club’s 2008-2009 president-elect, who described Darany’s many accomplishments including his role as chairman of the Dearborn Goodfellow Paper Drive.
Darany has served on the boards of directors for the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce, the Inter City Service Club Council and Dearborn Rotary. He has also served on the City Beautiful Commission, which he chaired in 2002 and 2003.
Other community groups benefiting from Darany’s time, energy and personal resources include the Dearborn Jaycees, Dearborn Special Olympics, Dearborn/Dearborn Heights Association for Retired Citizens, the Exchange Club of Dearborn, Dearborn Kiwanis, Dearborn Community Arts Council, Dearborn Animal Shelter and Meals on Wheels. In 2006, Darany received the prestigious Community Service Award from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
For 15 years, Darany served in leadership positions with the Karmanos Cancer Institute, including fundraising positions that helped to raise more than $350,000.
Surprised and visibly moved by the Rotary presentation and the attendance of his sister and brother-in-law Theresa and David Smith, Darany expressed his sincere appreciation to the Club.
