Amirah Kaid, 26, a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, holds up a bobblehead doll in the likeness of the Illinois senator during a watch party at a Dearborn restaurant for his speech at the Democratic National Convention on August 28. Obama campaign leaders in Michigan are scheduled to meet with Arab Americans and American Muslims in Southfield on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Two separate townhall meetings are set to be held at the Silver Garden of Southfield, 24350 Southfield Rd, at 3 p.m. for the American Muslim community and at 4:30 p.m. for Arab Americans. Michigan Arab and Muslim outreach coordinator for the campaign, Rashida Tlaib, said the meetings will be an opportunity to directly engage high-ranking campaign figures and voice concerns about policy. Several Arab and Muslim Americans participated in a conference call with Obama Michigan Policy Director Jenna Pilat on Wednesday, in which they discussed foreign policy, civil rights, immigration, health care, small business, education, environment and executive hiring practices. A list of consensus positions on key issues is being prepared for consideration by the campaign as it works to gain support from Michigan Arab and Muslim communities. Tlaib can be reached for more information at 734.752.5959 or rtlaib@michiganforchange.com.
