Marking the beginning of Ramadan, a number of elected officials at various levels circulated statements recognizing the Islamic holy month.
“The holy month of Ramadan is a special time of prayer, fasting and service,” read a statement from President George W. Bush. “I thank the men and women of the Muslim community for their contributions to America. Your love of family and gratitude to God have strengthened the moral fabric of our country. Our nation is stronger and more hopeful because of the generosity, talents, and compassion of our Muslim citizens. Laura and I send our best wishes. Ramadan Mubarak.”
Among other officials who sent messages were Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and Michigan State Rep. Gino Poliori.
“This is not only a month of fasting and prayer — it is also a time to reflect on the needs of those who are less fortunate,” read Obama’s statement. “In the weeks to come, Michelle and I want to wish all American Muslims our very best wishes. We hope Ramadan brings you happiness, good health, and a sense of renewal.”
“State Representative Gino Polidori (D-Dearborn), who represents the largest Muslim population in the state of Michigan, would like to wish Muslims across the great state of Michigan a blessed and peaceful Ramadan.”
“This is a very important time for many of my constituents,” said Polidori. “It is a time of fasting, self-sacrifice and inner spiritual reflection for the more than one billion Muslims around the world who celebrate Ramadan. My thoughts are with my constituents and with the many Muslim families around Michigan during this important holy month.”
