Oakwood Healthcare System is offering flu and pneumonia vaccines for adults throughout Wayne County in October and November.

The cost for flu shots is $25, and the cost for pneumonia shots is $40.  Only cash and checks will be accepted and no insurance other than Medicare will be accepted.

People covered by Medicare Part B should take their Medicare cards with them to receive the vaccines at no cost.

Influenza (the flu) can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with breathing or heart conditions, according to Oakwood spokesperson Judith McNeeley. About 36,000 Americans die from the flu every year.

The flu vaccine is recommended especially for people over 50, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases or weakened immune systems, people with disorders that make it difficult to breathe or swallow, healthcare providers and children over 6 months of age. Oakwood’s seasonal flu shot clinics are for adults over 18 only.  Parents should contact their primary care physician to arrange flu shots for children.
