A reward of up to $6,000 has been announced by the group Crime Stoppers for information leading to arrests of men who beat to death 21 year-old Maher Almaweri outside a Southwest Detroit gas station in August.

On August 21, Almaweri, a U.S. citizen from Yemen, went to a gas station at McGraw and Tarnow Roads to buy a phone card, according to witnesses and family.
He was surrounded by several men who assaulted him severely. Witnesses said shots were fired from across the street and the men fled.
Almaweri died of his injuries. Police have had little to follow up on.
“We hope that someone comes forward with information about this terrible beating,” said Crime Stoppers President John Broad.

Crime Stoppers of Michigan serves Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, St. Clair, Monroe, Wayne and Washtenaw counties, offering people who have witnessed or heard about a crime but are afraid to call the police out of fear of retaliation, a way of reporting what they know. More than 2,500 tips were called in in the last year, leading to about 700 arrests, according to the group.
