DETROIT — Several area mosques, with the help of the Muslim Center in Detroit and charitable group Islamic Relief, will serve and distribute hot meals, food boxes and clothing on Sept. 12 in observance of Ramadan.
Free health screenings will also be provided, according to a release from the Council on American-Islamic Relations — Michigan.
The Tawheed Center in Farmington Hills and eight other mosques in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Ypsilanti are to distribute $60,000 worth of food items to those in need in the community, the release said.
“Ramadan is not simply a time for fasting and prayer, but also a time to heighten spirituality through serving others,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.

The group Muslim-Americans Answer the Call is also taking part in a widespread service campaign, culminating in the first official September 11 Day of Service and Remembrance. Over the course of the summer, American Muslim volunteer groups carried out more than 3,000 days of service in communities across the United States, according to the group, founded in response to President Barack Obama’s “Renew America Together” service initiative.
“Muslim Americans Answer the Call is the true embodiment of the President’s call for change,” said Dalia Mogahed, member of the President’s Council on Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. “Muslim-American volunteerism this summer demonstrates the community’s desire to positively contribute to our country.”
