DEARBORN — Despite the popularity of fashion magazines and TV shows, good style can be hard to attain, especially when high department store prices for accessories are factored in.
But a new boutique in Detroit on the border of Dearborn named Funkalooza aims to change that by offering customers a chance to find the perfect accessories for their favorite outfits all in one place.
“I wanted to keep our standards classy by selling designer items, but at the same time I wanted to make them affordable,” said Nofaila Seklawi, the 25-year-old owner of Funkalooza.
“The goal was to create a store where a girl can walk in and pick out all her accessories in one place.”
While women are the targeted clientele for Funkalooza, men’s items such as fine colognes, sunglasses, and wallets are also a big part of the store’s inventory.
Among the popular items targeted for women include designer purses and handbags, perfumes, makeup items, and a wide range of both casual and high-end jewelry; the latter featuring items from Tiffany’s. Even kids’ items are also available.
Nofaila Seklawi, owner of Funkalooza, believes it’s important to offer a woman a full line of both affordable and high-end accessories all in one place. The items are hand-chosen and often hand-made, as Seklawi uses her connections with various companies in places like Lebanon, New York City, China, Tibet, and Bangladesh to bring in unique accessories that customers will be hard-pressed to find in other metro Detroit stores.
Seklawi, who studied Interior Design and Architecture at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn and currently attends the University of Michigan-Dearborn, considers herself a “style consultant,” as she takes joy in helping customers pick out the right accessories whether for their own personal wardrobe or for their friends as gifts.
Among other services offered are customized gift basket-making, graphic design projects such as business cards and fliers, and on-site interior design projects.
“I’ve always been a multi-tasker; just doing a million things in one day,” said Seklawi, who designed the store to feel comfortable and warm.
“But I decided to create Funkalooza because I wanted to pull it all together and focus on one business to make the best use of my skills.”
Seklawi also thanked her family for helping to open the store.
Funkalooza will also carry a varied selection of Valentine’s Day gifts for the upcoming Feb. 14 holiday including stuffed animals, balloons, candy items, and, eventually, fresh roses. Customers will receive $5.00 off any bill over $20.00 from now through February.
Store hours are 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday with longer hours expected in the summer. Funkalooza is located at 6845 Greenfield Road in Detroit just south of Warren Road.
The phone number is 313.582.9690 and a Web site, www.funkalooza.com, is expected to launch shortly.
