At left: Founder of the Bint Jebail Cultural Center Mohammed Turfe, R, presents Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly with a plaque during an event honoring O’Reilly on Thursday, a day after the mayor gave his annual state of the city address. O’Reilly spoke Wednesday about the city’s painful efforts to make deep cuts in response to economic downturn and dropping property tax revenue. “The city can no longer afford to continue to offer programs, facilities and services in the way we traditionally have,” he said. He announced the formation of taskforces made up of a wide range of community figures to advise the city on business and cutbacks. “I am convinced that we can, and that we will, seize this moment and overcome our challenges,” he said. “Together, we will make the tough decisions, we will rightsize our service mix, we will create an even better City.” Visit cityofdearborn.org to watch the full speech.
