Some Arab Americans are pushing a movement to fill in “Arab” under the “Other” category for the question on race.

DETROIT — Census forms were mailed this week to homes accross the country.
Mayor Dave Bing was at the Arab American and Chaldean Council’s Youth Recreation and Leadership Center in Detroit on Thursday speaking on the importance of participation in the 2010 Census.

Following the 2000 Census, Michigan lost a congressional seat and millions in federal dollars because of lower population counts. The Census Bureau estimates that that more than 70,000 Michigan residents were missed, more than 30,000 of them in Wayne County.

Ethnic community leaders have for months been raising awarness on the issue.
Some Arab Americans are pushing a movement to fill in “Arab” under the “Other” category for the question on race, in an attempt to raise government estimates of the country’s Arab American population.

The Census questionairre includes ten basic questions and was designed to take only about ten minutes to complete.
