DETROIT — An arraignment of information is expected to be held on Monday, August 16 at the 3rd Circuit Court in Detroit
in the case of Alexander Yono.
Yono, 30, of Oak Park, was charged with second–degree murder, assault with intent to murder and three counts of felonious assault in connection with the death of Mohammed Abboud, 18 of Dearborn, last month. The arraignment is expected to be held before Judge Daniel Ryan.
Yono’s pre-trial hearing took place on Thursday, August 5th at 19th District Court with Judge Mark Somers presiding when several witnesses tied Yono to the death of Abboud.
Maya Perry, a witness, stated that Yono was among the people who were aboard a party bus to celebrate her 18th birthday. The bus and its occupants departed from the Dearborn Ice Skating Center located at 14900 Ford Road around 10:30 p.m. on July 12.
Perry stated that sometime later, an altercation broke out between Yono and Justin Harajai, 19, after Yono was allegedly caught having sex with a 17-year-old girl on the bus. Yono allegedly pulled out a knife and waved it at Harajai while threatening him verbally.
Perry said she ordered the bus back to the Ice Skating rink because she was worried about a fight. When the bus returned, about seven people were allegedly waiting outside, having been called by a passenger. One such person was Ramsey Haddad, who admitted to punching Yono after he got off the bus.
Yono’s defense attorney, Dominick J. Sorise, said that his client was responding to the attack when he allegedly killed Abboud and injured other passengers with the knife.
“Something happened here to cause him to use the knife,” Sorise said regarding his client. “He was beat to the ground by seven, eight people who were called to the scene. They put him to the ground. He would not be here today if he didn’t have a knife.”
Another witness stated that up to three men engaged in the confrontation with Yono, some holding him, and others hitting and kicking him. It was at that time that witnesses say Yono pulled out a knife and began attacking.
Abboud, who had allegedly been trying to break up the altercation, was stabbed.
While Sorise believes Yono acted in self-defense, Judge Somers bound Yono over until August 16 at the 3rd District Court arraignment.
