DETROIT — Author Mark Braverman is scheduled to visit metro Detroit for a series of seven events titled “The Path to Peace in Israel/Palestine,” from October 1-3.
Braverman is an American Jewish author of the Feb. 2010 book “Fatal Embrace: Christians, Jews, and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land.” He writes about his experiences visiting the region along with what he called “powerful Christian Zionist organizations that join with the pro-Israel Lobby to support the U.S. administration’s unconditional support of the Jewish State,” despite the continued illegal occupation of the West Bank and siege on Gaza.
“I think this is a global justice issue and as such the American church or the global church has an important role to play,” Braverman said in an interview about his upcoming appearances. “The civil rights movement in America and the South African anti-apartheid movements were led by church leaders and this book is really a call to the church in this country and the West in general to take up the issue and to not be held back by the concerns that it is somehow anti-Jewish or anti-Semitic, which I don’t think is a relevant principle; speaking out on this issue is not the least bit anti-Semitic or motivated by hatred of the Jewish people.”
Braverman currently lives in Maryland and serves on the advisory board of the Friends of Sabeel North America organization and on the board of the Israeli committee Against House Demolitions-USA.
Reverend Fran Hayes of the Littlefield Presbyterian Church in Dearborn talked about Braverman’s perspective and the perspective of churches on the issue of Palestine.
“Mark was a fairly traditional Zionist Jewish American but his viewpoint was so dramatically changed by his experiences of visiting the region and now he is committed to working for a just peace,” she said.
“Within churches and within our society people don’t normally get a balanced picture; I think a lot of people in the Arab American community aren’t that familiar with the committed Jewish peacemakers as well and all of the different perspectives offered.”
