East Lansing – East Lansing officials will not press charges against the unnamed individual who claimed responsibility for burning a Qur’an and placing its remnants outside an Islamic Center in East Lansing on Sept. 11th.
According to officials, there was no evidence that the man was responsible for the act with the exception that he turned himself into police on Sept. 15. Although the charge of littering was considered, Assistant City Attorney Tom Yeadon felt that the charge of littering would be potentially “insulting” regarding the Qur’an burning. A Trespassing charge was also considered. “We are relieved that the investigation has been completed quickly, and we respect its outcome,” said President of the Islamic Society of Greater Lansing, Dr. Mahmoud Mousa, on their website. “The Islamic Center had wished from the very beginning that the individual be forgiven…we hope that he will work towards being more tolerant and we are willing to help him and anyone else who has questions,” he wrote.
In response to the incident, the Islamic Society of Greater Lansing launched the “Learn, Don’t Burn” campaign. During this campaign, anyone can receive a free copy of the Qur’an in English by visiting the center during prayer time at 8:00 p.m.
