Early this year U.S. Representative for Iowa’s 5th congressional district, Republican Steve King introduced House Resolution 140 also known as “The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2011” to the House floor. The bill’s objective is to alter the 143-year-old 14th Amendment of the U.S. constitution which grants birthright citizenship. Some GOP members are arguing American citizenship shouldn’t be granted to the children of undocumented citizens, and are asking the U.S. Congress to revise provisions of the 14th Amendment by holding hearings. In accordance to the amendment anyone born in the U.S. is inevitably an American citizen. If it’s reversed the children of undocumented citizens will no longer be granted this right. Section one of the amendment reads: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the State wherein they reside.” The amendment was adopted in 1868, but has become a controversial topic in recent years and is expected to spark several heated debates in 2011.
