A report released by the Electronic Frontier Foundations shows the Federal Bureau of Investigations has made nearly 40,000 violations while gathering intelligence since the terrorist attacks on Sep. 11, 2001. The report was released Monday. According to 2,500 pages of documents looked over by EFF officials, the FBI violated the privacy rights of average citizens. The report’s data was obtained by filing a Freedom of Information Act request. The report also shows some companies disclosed information on their consumers to the federal government in a setting that can’t be justified legally. Mark Rumold, an EFF fellow who is involved in the FOIA Litigation for Accountable Government said he hopes the report draws attention to the FBI’s intelligence violations. The report can be viewed by visiting the EFF’s website.
