DEARBORN – Mark Somers, a judge in the city’s 19th District Court, wants to meet with Florida pastor Terry Jones prior to his visit on Friday for his planned anti-Islam protest.
Somers has issued an order for Jones to appear in court prior to his protest, on Thursday, to answer questions about the event. Jones is scheduled to protest on Friday, April 22 in the city.
Also according to the Detroit News, Wayne County prosecutors announced today that they want Jones, who burned a copy of the Qur’an in March, to post a “peace bond” in order to cover the cost for extra security from police officers at his demonstration. Dearborn Mayor Jack O’Reilly said he heard in national interviews that Jones has mentioned potentially becoming a “martyr” as well, even though much of his own congregation has left him in recent years. Jones said Dearborn police want him to pay $100,000 in overtime costs according to the Detroit News report to ensure safety for city residents and visitors.
Interfaith vigils in support of religious harmony and tolerance are expected from religious leaders of various faiths on Thursday at the Islamic Center of America, where Jones has indicated he would like to protest, and again on Friday along with a press conference.
Jones said he plans to protest even if his permit is denied according to the report.
