DETROIT – The world-famous Kronk boxing gym is known for its many champions including heavyweights like Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and more.

The 9-year-old boxing prodigy has already won two national tournament championships.

But the gym’s latest champion comes in a much smaller size. Husam Al Mashadi, age 9, who trains at Kronk, brought the Title Boxing 2011 National Championship home after winning its tournament in Memphis, Tennessee on June 9.  Al Mashadi fought in the 9- and 10-year-olds division.

His trainers include Najah Shareef, Ali Nasser, and Majed Fradi, who are all expecting big things from the young prodigy.

Al Mashadi followed in his brothers’ footsteps when he began training three years ago and has now won two championships including his 2010 Ringside World Championship in Kansas City.

Shareef thinks he can be one of the best boxers to come out of the area if he keeps working hard, and he said that legendary Kronk trainer Emanuel Steward has been impressed with him as well.

“You can tell he’s a natural…he also trains with kids older than him,” Shareef said.

Several other top prospects have climbed the ranks with Kronk recently including 16-year-old Ahmed Mahmood, 13-year-old Gheith Mohhamed, 13-year-old Basil Nasser, and 13-year-old Hussein Bilal.

Shareef believes Al Mashadi could be among the best when it’s all said and done.

“He’s a superstar with a lion’s heart, he just doesn’t have the world “scared” in his dictionary and that’s what makes him so good, he’s a true fighter,” he said.
