LANSING — A study from the Center for Educational Performance and Information has shown that hundreds of newer teachers are leaving Michigan for other states because of a shrinking number of students, to study at teaching colleges, and because of budget and staff cuts in the state.
The number of public school teachers in Michigan has shrunk by nearly 9 percent, or around 10,000 jobs since the 2004-2005 school year according to the study.
School districts this fall are facing cuts of nearly $400 per student from the state fund. Michigan has seen a drop of 8 percent in students over the past five years according to statistics from the Department of Education. g
