TROY — U.S. Congressman Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp.) announced on Thursday his intention to run for reelection in the newly-drawn 14th Congressional District in Michigan in 2012.
Peters told his supporters in an email blast that he believes the creation of this new Congressional District bridges diverse communities and comes at a pivotal time in the United States’ history. The district runs from Pontiac through West Bloomfield, Hamtramck, Farmington Hills, and parts of Detroit among several other cities.
Peters has a history of representing communities in Oakland County included in the new district.
The current Congressman for the 14th District is John Conyers, Jr. (D-Detroit) who will likely run in the 13th District according to local reports.
U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-Detroit) has also announced he will run in the 14th District, switching from the 13th that he currently represents, as will Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence, Virg Bernero’s running mate in his race for Michigan Governor.
Peters said that the diverse communities of the 14th District share the same concerns.
“I believe that regardless of where we call home, we all want the same things: economic security, fairness from government, and an honest chance to find success and happiness — I’ve spent my life fighting for these values,” he said.
