DETROIT — Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah Dinner in front of hundreds of people telling the crowd that President Barack Obama is committed to the continued support of Israel, calling it “unbreakable.”
The event was held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center downtown.
Biden was introduced by U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and gave a speech of about 20 minutes , during which he said that there was a “sustained effort to de-legitimize Israel” according to a Detroit Free Press report of the event. He also said the UN General Assembly has been “mildly hostile” to Israel.
Biden has said on camera in the past that he is a “Zionist,” but President Obama’s condemnations of illegal Israeli settlement building in occupied Palestine have been criticized by pro-Israeli groups.
Others have said Obama has not done enough to stop settlement construction and have urged him to withhold aid, of which Israel gets billions a year from the U.S., in order to put pressure on them to stop.
