LANSING – Last Friday, a new bill was signed into law making it illegal to lie or conceal facts from Michigan police officers investigating a crime.
People have the right to remain silent according to the law but must tell the truth when speaking. The law is similar to the federal one regarding agents.
According to the ACLU, however, the law is unconstitutional. The organization is concerned about people not reporting crimes, witnesses afraid of being charged for making a mistake, and more, calling them possible unintended consequences according to a Michigan Radio report.
