DEARBORN — The Dearborn City Council has approved the budget for the 2013 fiscal years, bringing with it some notable changes. Among them include staff cuts, milage increases, capital improvement cuts as well as health care changes.
Among the staff cut from the $105 million budget include an executive secretary from the 19th district court, the city planner, the Dearborn Hills Golf Course superintendent and the director of the Dearborn Historical Museum.
Health care changes are required by Public Act 152 of 2011, which means that city employees will be required to pay 20 percent of their healthcare premiums. The city says that because of that change they can save up to $1.4 million across all departments, which will help the city deficit.
The increase on the millage, which was voted by Dearborn residents in 2011 will also go into full affect.
Capital improvement cuts were also made for the fiscal budget this year which include axing a $13.5 million conference center project that Mayor Jack O’Reilly had addressed would help the local economy earlier this year in his state of the city address. Other cuts included $4 million planned for a new aquatic facility at Ford Woods Park and $3.6 million scheduled for renovations to the Rotunda baseball and softball fields.
