DEARBORN — The Dearborn Police Department has captured over 100 individuals in the last month who had outstanding larceny and theft related warrants, as part of an initiative that was announced at the beginning of the year.
The initiative, spear-headed by Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad was enforced after an analysis revealed that there were over 700 individuals who had outstanding warrants with the police department. Most of these individuals are believed to have committed some form of larceny or theft crime, and then failed to show up to their court hearing.
Additionally, Ron Haddad says larceny, retail fraud and other theft related crimes will now be taken more seriously with both the police department, and at the 19th District Court. Usually, these kinds of fines are viewed as minor offenses, with small fines and limited jail time. Haddad says they will now result in stiffer penalties which will include bonds, fines, probation and jail sentencing in a effort to curb such activity.
“I am asking for your assistance in educating our youth and the public as to the adverse impact these crimes have on our local economy, property values and overall image of our city. I have instituted a policy, in conjunction with the 19th District Court, which will include serious consequences for those who commit these types of crimes,” Haddad said.
Additionally, juvenile offenders and their parents will also incur stiffer penalties. According to the police department, parents of these young offenders may be subject to penalties under Michigan’s law if they contribute, aid in, or allow their children’s criminal behavior.
