She said Ficano’s cuts will result in her office losing 22 assistant prosecutors, three investigators and a weekend clerk. Worthy says she’s filed a Freedom of Information Act request to find out how the number of layoffs were decided. Worthy noted the cuts are a danger to public safety and her office is backlogged in cases involving sexual assault and homicide. Worthy says her office also doesn’t have the resources required to cover traffic and PPO dockets. Earlier this week there were reports that cases in the 36th District Court were dismissed or adjourned because prosecutors weren’t available. The cases expected to be heard included drunken driving and suspended license cases. Ficano has defended the cuts to Worthy’s office saying it’s over budgeted and that she’s using a “scar tactic” by calling the cuts a threat to public safety.
