DEARBORN - Natasha Dado, a general assignment reporter for The Arab American News was selected for the 2013 New America Media Women Immigrants Fellowship for her story proposal on the difficulties of getting an Islamic divorce.
Only 10 journalists from media outlets around the country were selected, and include five from ethnic media and five from the mainstream media. She is expected to travel to Washington D.C. this month where the fellows will meet to participate in a two day training program at the Alliance for Justice April 25-26. Following the training all fellows will be required to write an in-depth substantive report, or series on their story proposals before Aug. 30 of this year. In D.C. fellows will listen to lectures, discussions, and get journalistic training related to immigration policy, the history of the women’s movement, and the intersection of immigration and gender.

Dado, 26, is a Chaldean American, and graduate of Wayne State University’s journalism school. She has worked as a reporter for TAAN since May 2010 covering metro-Detroit’s Arab and Muslim communities. Dado has written extensively about important social and political issues concerning both communities including domestic violence, LGBT struggles, immigration, and the continued profiling of individuals by agents of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In 2011 she visited the Poynter Institute in Florida to participate in the journalism training seminar Elections 2012: The Campaign For Social Media with more than 25 other reporters. She was recently accepted into Grading the Teachers, a specialized reporting institute taking place May 8-10 at the Detroit Media Partnership, where journalists will gather to discuss issues surrounding teacher evaluation.
