DETROIT – More than 60 faith leaders and organizations from across the country have signed onto a letter circulated by Michigan United, the Northern Borders Coalition and other immigrant rights groups supporting proposed amendments to prevent detention and interrogation at places of worship and schools by immigration enforcers.
The clergy have come forward to support Coons 13 and Blumenthal 8 amendments that would make it illegal for Border Patrol officers to violate agency policy and harass people at places of worship or those dropping off or picking up children from school. Southwest Detroit schools have been the scene of enforcement actions despite protest from the community and intervention on behalf of elected officials demanding that Border Patrol be accountable to its policy. At one point, a U.S. citizen was detained after dropping her children at school at the same time advocates held a news conference at another school where parents had been harassed.
