Maple Elementary School is partnering with the Dearborn Police Department to initiate a “Walking School Bus” program, in an effort to reduce traffic around the school in the mornings during drop-off times.
The program encourages parent volunteers to walk groups of students to school from a designated corner, two blocks away from the school, where other parents would be able to drop off their children.
The program will be implemented at the beginning of the school year, and organizers are hoping to expand it to other schools. Aside from decreasing traffic, the program aims at improving students’ fitness and helping them socialize with their peers.
