A drunken Canadian man swam across the Detroit River, to the United States, and almost made it back to Canada, before being arrested on Monday evening, July 22.
A woman notified police around 11:30 p.m. that her friend John Morillo, 47, of Windsor, had gone swimming in the river and had not returned to Windsor. American and Canadian coast guards were dispatched. They rescued and arrested Morillo on the Canadian side of the River, as he was swimming back to Windsor. He had no injuries.
“If I’m going to be in the paper, I’d at least like them to say I actually made it, even though I got in trouble and everything,” Morillo told the Windsor Star.
He could be fined up to $25,000 for swimming in a shipping channel.
