MICHIGAN — A new bill would allow charities in the State to collect donations, while volunteers stand, or walk on the street. 

The bill was proposed by State Rep. Terry Brown, after a dispute in the Thumb area. Brown says that the Sebewaing Village Council didn’t allow the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars to have their annual poppy sale, after a State transportation official said it violated the law. 

The bill has been sent to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.   

 It would allow municipal governments to pass a resolution to permit charitable fundraising on roads within their jurisdiction and prevent the State from getting in the way of selling items, such as candy or flowers on streets.
