DETROIT — This week, Wayne County Prosecutor Kim Worthy announced that she is endorsing Wayne County Sherriff Benny Napoleon for Detroit mayor, rather than Mike Duggan, the former CEO of the Detroit Medical Center and Napoleon’s opponent in the race.
Political analysts say that the endorsement serves as a major benefit to Napoleon’s campaign and will help sway more undecided voters. Polls currently show that Duggan is beating Napoleon, 2 to 1, with 30 percent of the voters still undecided.
Duggan said Worthy told him she would be endorsing Napoleon weeks ago, and he doesn’t have any hard feelings. In a report, Duggan said Worthy was doing a fine job, and that the two have a good relationship.
Ten years ago, Worthy was preparing to run against Duggan for prosecutor, before he went on to become head of the DMC. In 2004, Worthy, who had just become prosecutor, requested that Wayne County’s auditor general conduct an audit of the office, while it was under Duggan. A report showed that over $800,000 worth of contracts were discovered, which were never submitted for bid, or approved by the county commission. Worthy has called the report extremely disturbing.
