STERLING HEIGHTS —The Madamma Driving School continues to attract refugees and immigrants from the Middle East, because of its bilingual services. The school offers classes in both Arabic and Chaldean.
It can be difficult for immigrants to learn how to drive with instructors who don’t speak their native language. Many immigrants have to bring translators with them to their driving lessons, because it makes the process easier.
According to the U.S. Census, in the last four years, 23,000 Chaldeans have moved to Michigan. Of those, 13,000 have sought refugee status in Michigan, after fleeing Iraq because of religious persecution. Since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, more than half the country’s Christians have fled because of violence against minorities.
