DEARBORN — Fatima Fakhreddine, a senior at the University of Michigan Dearborn, began interning at The Arab American News (TAAN) in January. The 22-year-old, who resides here in Dearborn, is majoring in journalism and minoring in political science.
She expects to graduate in April and will complete her internship with TAAN at the end of this semester. In a short period of time as an intern, Fakhreddine has raised awareness about important issues through her work.
Her first article published in last week’s paper highlighted the pressure many women in the Arab American community experience to get married at a young age. The story was Fakhreddine’s idea. This week, she covered an event featuring Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, and she also recently reported on the struggles Bahraini protesters faced during the 2011 uprisings in their country.
Fakhreddine is passionate about women’s issues, human rights and breaking down negative stereotypes about Muslim Americans.
The Arab American News is currently seeking new internship applicants for the Spring/Summer semester. If you’re majoring in journalism, this is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the field.
