DETROIT – The Detroit Public Schools System will be cutting the paychecks of administrators and teachers in October. The 10 percent pay cut needs to be approved by state Superintendent Mike Flanagan before it goes into affect. The salary for the top DPS teacher would decrease from $66,000 to $59,400 per year. Part of the plan involves closing 24 schools and buildings over the next four years, starting from the 2015-16 academic year.
Voters’ rejection of the countywide tax millage increase during the primary elections played a part in the proposed cuts. The cut is built to eliminate the $127 million deficit the school district is currently facing.
