DEARBORN — The sale of the Russian steel company Severstal’s factory in Dearborn was finalized Tuesday.
In July, Severstal announced it was selling its plant in Dearborn to AK Steel for $700 million; and the Columbus, Ohio factory was purchased by Steel Dynamics for $1.63 billion.
The sale of Severstal’s factories in North America come after the United States announced sanctions against Russia.
Severstal’s plant in Dearborn employs $1,800 workers. The company didn’t announce how the sale would impact them.
Severstal, owned by Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov, received a state permit in May that authorized it to release higher levels of pollution into the air. Officials from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) told The Arab American News last month that the permit would transfer over to AK Steel. On Wednesday, Sept. 10 a court hearing was held regarding a lawsuit against Severstal over the emissions permit. The DEQ, which authorized the permit, is also being sued by residents for the same reason.
