DETROIT — Federal officials are now warning local law enforcement about the threat of ISIS on American soil, according to WXYZ Channel 7.
According to federal officials, these threats are not coming from organized groups, but rather “lone wolves”. High traffic areas like downtown Detroit have been put on alert.
Detroit Crime Commission Executive Director Andrew Arena said that with so much happening overseas, including the recent U.S. bombing strikes on militants in Syria, the threat on American soil could escalate.
Homeland Security officials have been warning police departments to be on the lookout for individual suspects. They are described as people who may not have direct connections with ISIS, but may sympathize with the cause.
“You know, this is an organization, ISIS, that really does not have the ability to hit us in the homeland like al Qaeda did, like a 9/11,” Arena said. “The only way they can do it is through operatives or people who think like them.”
Federal officials say more than 100 people have traveled or attempted to travel to Syria, but Arena said that searches for “lone wolves” must come with national security and civil liberties in mind. Multiple arrests have been made across the country, including women who were detained in Minneapolis.
“The reality is if you start looking for a certain type of person, if you start stereotyping, you’re going to miss the problem,” Arena said. “The bad guys, they’re looking for someone who does not look like who we think a terrorist looks like.”
