MICHIGAN — Because of the new changes to Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act, public records are expected to become cheaper and easier to access.
Government agencies will no longer charge more than 10 cents per page for copies of public records. Under the new changes to Michigan FOIA law, government agencies can also face increased fines for delaying responses. People seeking the records can also sue if they believe the fees are too costly.
According to the Michigan Press Association (MPA), the changes have been discussed for year and had to be compromised. Dirk Milliman of the MPA said the new law increases transparency to public records. The changes will take effect beginning July 1.
