DETROIT — Raw strength, a tenacious spirit and an unrelenting drive are all traits memorable fighters have in common– qualities quite evident in Mohamed “The Hawk” Adam, the emerging Arab American boxer from Dearborn.
Adam took the boxing world by storm at his professional debut Feb. 6– in a fight that ended in a 37 second knockout. The elated, diverse crowd of Metro Detroiters burst into a celebration that echoed throughout Detroit’s Masonic Temple and beyond, a sound of excitement that has been missing in Detroit for a long time.
The whispers among hopefuls in the community have many wondering whether “The Hawk” could be the next “Prince”— a reference to former WBO, WBC, IBF, Lineal featherweight and European bantamweight champion Naseem Hamad, who will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame later this year.
The fight night was the second such night in “the D” promoted by NFL All Star Tight End Antonio Gates. Also looking on in amusement was Detroit boxing legend Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns, who joined a sell-out crowd at the Masonic Temple.
Adam, the son of a first-generation auto worker, is like many Arab Americans who come from humble beginnings. He understood early in life that hard work was the only road to success. As an amateur, he trained in the late Emmanuel Steward’s Kronk Gym located in the heart of the Motor City, where he built a notable amateur career. By 2010, Adam stood out as a top contender – achieving a silver medal in the National Golden Gloves competition.
Adam is devoted to the closely-knit community that raised him, giving him a large, loyal and intense fan base that feels more like an extended family. His fan base has received attention from prominent boxing names around the country and has continued to grow exponentially since his debut. His dedication, humility and dangerous right hook make him an up-and-coming star with a bright future.
Adam’s team plans to announce the details of his next fight very soon, likely in Chicago or Detroit. More information on Mohamed “The Hawk” Adam can be found on Facebook at his fan page.
