DETROIT — Arab American and Chaldean Council President Dr. Haifa Fakhouri was recognized for her human rights efforts and leadership skills at multiple events last week.
The Urban League of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan nominated Fakhouri as one of the honorees at its 36th Annual Salute to Distinguished Warriors Dinner, on March 26.
Distinguished Warriors are individuals who have accomplished outstanding work in the areas of human and civil rights. Fakhouri was recognized with this honor based on her service to our community.
Fakhouri was also selected as one of four female leaders who served on a panel at Henry Ford College’s 42nd Women’s Recognition Luncheon “Women Leaders: Driving Our Future” on March 27.
She received the 2015 Gene L. Brazell Community Role Model Award at the event.
The purpose of the luncheon is to raise money to support Student Outreach and Support (SOS) and its Student Emergency Fund, which provides financial assistance to HFC students with unforeseen emergency needs to help them stay in school and complete their education.
The ACC president also spoke at the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command event that celebrated Women’s History month on March 25.
Fakhouri discussed her struggle to provide a safe environment for Arab refugees coming to Detroit.
“I would fly back and forth from Jordan to the U.S, when I worked for the United Nations, because I was determined to create an organization that would address the needs of the hundreds of Arabs coming to Detroit,” she said.
