BEIRUT — Lebanese police shot dead notorious Islamist militant Osama Mansour and another man in the northern city of Tripoli Thursday evening, state media reported.
The National News Agency said Mansour and his partner Ahmad al-Nather were killed in a shootout with the Internal Security Forces’ Information Branch.
Mansour was wearing an explosives belt during the clash, the report said. A photo attached to the report allegedly shows the two militants dead inside a car.
Four others were arrested after the shootout, it added.
Both Mansour and Nather were carrying fake identity cards, according to Elnashra news site. Other reports said the shootout occured in the Zahrieh area of Tripoli.
Elnashra said a grenade was detonated and gunfire was heard near al-Asmar Square in the neighborhood of Bab al-Tebbaneh, where Mansour’s relatives live.
Mansour, who was close to Lebanon’s top Islamist fugitive Shadi Mawlawi, was wanted for plotting several attacks against the army in Tripoli.
He also took part in clashes between the neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
Mansour and Mawlawi, who remains at large, are believed to have links with al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.
