Kalmazoo- At 12:24 Saturday afternoon, a 4.0 earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey, struck about 5 miles southeast of Galesburg, Michigan, which is just east of Kalamazoo.

In metro Detroit, residents have reportedly felt the earthquake as well. There are no immediate reports of damage, and a quake of this size on the Richter scale would not be likely to cause much if any damage.

Early reports are that this quake was felt from Chicago to Toledo. Earthquakes in Michigan are not a common occurrence, but they do happen every few years. 

Most are less than a 4.0, and if you didn’t feel it, you have lots of company. If you were driving, outside, or moving around, you probably missed it.

The epicenter of the quake is near the place where the strongest quake was ever recorded in Michigan. That happened on Aug. 19, 1947, according to the USGS. It damaged chimneys and cracked plaster over a large area that was around 50,000 square miles.
