WEST BLOOMFIELD—Nidhal
Garmo, the founder of One World Medical Mission was honored by the Greater West
Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce at its annual awards dinner with the Community Excellence Award for Health and Wellness. The event was held at the Shenandoah Country Club on May 12.
Garmo received the award for her humanitarian
efforts which started after the 2003 U.S. led invasion of Iraq, a tragedy that hit
close to home. Garmo was born in Baghdad, Iraq and moved to the United States
more than three decades ago.
Garmo has led several
humanitarian missions to Iraq over the years. She has helped bring relief to
the suffering of countless Iraqis by providing them with medical equipment and
supplies following the invasion.
Garmo visited Iraq
last year to help refugees who were forced to flee their homes because of the
threat of ISIS. She plans on making another trip to Iraq in September to assist
Yazidi women and children.
Garmo said One World
Medical Mission and its volunteers are working on establishing a mobile clinic
for Yazidi refugees.
“First I want to thank
God for choosing me for this mission because I found real happiness in saving
lives,” said Garmo while accepting her award.
Other honorees included Nancy Kaufman, Kaufman Children’s Center; Rabbi
Elimelech Goldberg, Kids Kicking Cancer; Kenneth and Deborah Macon, West
Bloomfield Library Board and Cable Commission; Missa Rajjo, The Tutoring Center
and Alan LaDuke of Berger, Ghersi, LaDuke.
“It’s a great testimonial to the West Bloomfield Chamber that we have a
very diverse group of honorees that are committed to helping our community
thrive. The Chamber is proud to recognize them for their contribution and
service,” said Suzanne Levine, Executive Director, Greater West Bloomfield
Chamber of Commerce.
