DEARBORN HEIGHTS — The Islamic House of Wisdom is holding services to commemorate the lives of the victims who died during hajj in Mena, outside Mecca, last week.
The public is invited to the event, which will take place at the Dearborn Heights religious center on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Mohammad Ali Elahi, the spiritual leader of the Islamic House of Wisdom, slammed Saudi Arabia, which organizes hajj, for allowing the tragedy to happen. At least 717 people died in the incident. Some media reports put the death toll at more than 2,000.
“This is a big tragedy, and the number of martyrs in the deadly incident is based on irresponsibility and carelessness of the Saudi regime,” Elahi said.
The imam called on Muslims and non-Muslims alike to be aware of the human rights abuses committed by the Saudi government, adding that the Gulf monarchy is un-Islamic and corrupt.
“We hope that people come and raise their voices and say enough is enough.”
The House of Wisdom also invites local pilgrims, who returned from Saudi Arabia, to share their experiences and observations from hajj with the American public.
Complementary breakfast will be served at Sunday’s event, Elahi said.
