Detroiters have taken it upon themselves to make their communities safer, thanks to the Angel’s Night Volunteer Campaign.
The campaign, established by the Coleman A. Young administration, allows community members to sign up to patrol their streets during the last three days of October. Administrators said the campaign was designed to fight off crime, specifically arson on the days leading up to and on Halloween.
The arsons have decreased “drastically” since volunteers began in the 1980’s, from 810 to 97 fires in 2014, according to the Detroit fire department.
At the end of October, Angel’s Night volunteers drive around different areas of the city and watch for suspicious activity. If they happen to see something suspicious, they use citizens band radios or call 9-1-1.
The campaign encourages residents to register soon to volunteer so they can keep their communities safe. They also advise homeowners to turn on their front and back porch lights to keep areas lit.
People can volunteer by calling Angels’ Night at (313) 224-4415 or by clicking here to sign up.
