HAIFA, Israel – An Israeli man was stabbed Tuesday afternoon after another Israeli Jew mistook him for an Arab. The stabbing comes after a wave of attacks by Palestinians and amid increasing tension and violence in the country.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, suffered light to moderate wounds after he was stabbed in a car park in Haifa, a city in the north of Israel. Israeli authorities in the suburb of Kirya Ata where the attack took place have deemed it a misdirected hate crime.
The attacker, an Israeli Jew, approached an Arab man near the city’s Kiryat Ata Ikea store and asked him if he was Arab, The Times of Israel reported. The Arab man, reportedly frightened by the question, answered that he was not. The attacker then approached another man, after seemingly concluding he was Arab from his appearance, and stabbed him in his upper torso.
The victim was actually an Israeli Jew.
He was taken to a local hospital, and the attacker is in police custody.
There were confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli authorities in Bethlehem Tuesday afternoon, as well as clashes in Jerusalem and Ra’anana.
In Jerusalem, two Palestinians carried out a deadly attack on a public bus, killing two Israelis. A separate attack in the capital killed another Israeli.
