DEARBORN — Social divides and stereotypes were focal points when comedian Amer Zahr took center stage to support Brian Stone, a Democratic candidate for state representative.
Zahr, who is also a Palestinian rights activist, law professor and movie maker, performed a routine about Arab Americans and their place in society at the Vote Stone Comedy Benefit Friday, Oct. 9, held at the Lebanese American Heritage Club.
Stone is running to represent Michigan’s 15th District, which covers Dearborn.
Stone told the audience that Dearborn can serve as an example for other cities on many fronts. He said he plans to take the Dearborn experience to the state and combat bigotry.
“Love is so much powerful than their hate,” he said, boasting the diversity of his supporters.
“In this room right here, we’ve got everything we need to win over the hate. We’ve got Muslims and Christians, pastors and priests. We even have one or two Buddhists. And we’ve got every kind of person you could imagine, gay, straight, Arab, White — everybody. This is how we make a difference. This is how Dearborn does it.”
