WARREN ― The Hamtramck resident and General Motors Tech Center valet supervisor who saved a women’s life after being stabbed outside the building last Wednesday was honored.
On Thursday, Didarul Sarder was given a proclamation by Warren Mayor Jim Fouts and a $1,000 gift certificate to a Shelby Township jewelry store.
The Hamtramck resident said he saw the 32-year-old woman repeatedly stabbing her 52-year-old mother when he rushed outside the front doors of the automaker’s Warren campus.
“My first reaction was to try to save this woman’s life,” Sarder told The Detroit News.
“Any of us — we never know when we’ll need a Didarul Sarder. Without his help, I believe the woman would’ve passed away,” Fouts said.
Sarder, a licensed gun carrier, intervened by pulling out his weapon and warned the woman to “drop the weapon or I’ll shoot” at about 9 a.m.
The woman complied, but Sarder could’ve lost his job, as his valet service employer has a no gun policy.
General Motors intervened, and the man returned to work on Monday.
The attacker is facing charges and the victim is recovering in the hospital.
“I wish I could do more,” Marty Clauw, the jewelry store owner said, handing over the gift certificate.
