DETROIT – Family and friends remain puzzled over the fatal
shooting of a 26-year-old Iraqi man at a Fuel Depot gas station located at
18142 W. Warren.
No suspects have been captured following the incident that
took place around 11:30 p.m., on Suday, July 17, when Ahsan Al-watan was shot in
the head multiple times, while he was driving a Dodge ram.
26-year-old Mohamed Munaser was a passenger in the vehicle
and was hospitalized for a foot injury he sustained from an accident that
ensued following the shooting.
According to witnesses, the two victims got into a
confrontation with people in a Black Cadillac Escalade, which pulled up next
to the dodge ram at the gas station across the street at 18141 W. Warren,
also a Fuel Depot.
That was when a male in the Escalade opened fire on the
Dodge ram, striking Al-watan in the head multiple times.
Al-watan attempted to drive off as gunshots were being
fired at his truck. The vehicle didn’t get far–it crashed into a column at
the Fuel Depot across the street just moments later.
It remains unclear if the victims knew the suspects.
According to a police report, Munaser did not sustain an
injury from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Oakwood Hospital and is
currently listed in stable condition.
Al-watan died at the scene of the incident.
Witnesses said the Escalade immediately fled the area,
driving southbound on Southfield Freeway and exiting on Ford Rd., heading
westbound in Dearborn.
A male who witnessed the shooting attempted to follow the
vehicle and was able to obtain a partial license plate number, but the gunman
in the Escalade began shooting at him.
The witness stopped following the vehicle out of safety
precautions.
Mustafa Munaser, the brother of Mohamed Munaser, rushed to
the scene when his brother called him for help.
Dozens of family members and friends followed him to the
area of the incident, once word got out about the shooting.
Mustafa told WXYZ
Channel 7 that he attempted to aid Al-watan at the scene of the incident, but he
was unresponsive.
“He was a very good hearted guy. He never bothered
anybody,” Munaser said.
The AANews learned that Al-watan just recently moved to the
U.S. According to reports, He was both a husband and a father and had resided
in Melvindale.
It remains unclear what caused the males in both vehicles
to engage in a dispute.
Imam Hisham Al-Husainy, leader of the Karbala Islamic
Center in Dearborn, told The AANews that Al-watan’s father is devastated.
He said family and friends remain shocked and still have
many questions that need to be answered, including the identities of the suspects.
Al-Husainy said that many people have speculated the
suspects to be either Arab American or African American males.
“Law enforcement
is keeping quiet,” Al-Husainy said. “We
don’t know much about who the suspects were. It’s very hush-hush. I hope it’s
not a member of the community, because it will be a disaster.”
Phone calls made
to the Detroit Police Department and Crime Stoppers regarding the suspects’
identities were also not returned.
Services for
Al-watan will be held at the Karbala Islamic Center on Tuesday, July 19 at 7:00
p.m.
