DEARBORN – The clown craze continues to cause panic in the metro Detroit region prompting police and school campuses to take caution.
At the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Thursday, administrators issued a warning due to a clown sighting on campus.
Campus police said a man wearing a white clown mask was spotted, “close to the trees, in the field between the University Center and the Mardigian Library around midnight October 4, 2016.”
They described the clown as about 6-feet tall with an average build. He was wearing dark clothing along with his mask.
“Please use caution if you observe any Clowns, due to the recent activity around Southeast Michigan. Please contact our department immediately,” said the security bulletin issued by campus police.
The Dearborn Police Department has issued a press release stating that three “clowns” were arrested in recent days stemming from two incidents.
The department has investigated several other unfounded reports. These two incidents are still under investigation and formal charges are pending. The police department is asking citizens to continue to call with any concerns regarding these types of incidents.
Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad stated, “these incidents create unnecessary hysteria within our community and threats and will not be tolerated. The Dearborn Police Department will pursue charges against any individual that deliberately commits an act that is designed to create fear or panic among our citizens.”
Two 18-year-old women dressed as clowns were arrested Thursday night in Roseville after allegedly chasing two 14-year-old girls.
Jamie Salinis and Elandra Sledge, both of Roseville, were charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
The girls ran away and went to the Roseville Police Department at about 9 p.m.
Officers went to the area and found “two idiots” dressed as clowns and they attempted to flee on foot, police said. A foot chase ensued and both individuals were taken into custody.
Police said the women were dressed in clown regalia from head to foot and stated they thought it was “funny to terrorize unsuspecting pedestrians.”
Both women stood mute in court Friday morning. Their bonds were set at $10,000 cash or surety, no ten percent. They are due back in court Oct. 20.
