LONDON — Photos have been circulating on Twitter of Hollywood giant Morgan Freeman attending a commemoration ceremony for Shia Muslims in London.
Freeman was pictured sitting cross-legged on the floor surrounded by worshippers marking Ashura, a major festival for Shia Muslims.
He was attending the ceremony at Al-Khoei Foundation, London, Queens Park as part of his documentary series “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman,” which premiered last April and claims to explore different cultures and religions to uncover the meaning of life.
Freeman has routinely expressed interest in Islam.
Earlier this year, during an episode of National Geographic’s “The Story of God,” he explained that he recently became intrigued with the religion.
“Meeting Muslims face to face, I’ve learned that Islam aims for people to live in peace,” Freeman remarked. “But watching the news today, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that. A tiny percentage of Muslims are waging war against the West.”
In that same episode, the actor The actor also stated that the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim religions pay homage to the same God. “Islam is an Arabic word that means surrender. Submission to God’s will. The same god the Jews and Christians worship,” he added.
Freeman, a veteran actor, has starred in movies such as “Million Dollar Baby,” “The Dark Knight,” and “Deep Impact.”
